Mediating online restricts the mediator’s ability to influence dialogue through body language, as well as restricting the opportunity to the same rapport as in face-to-face meeting.
However, there are times when online mediation is unparalleled…
1. When there’s an extreme power imbalance.
Extreme power imbalances often mean that participants cannot be in the same room as each other. Mediation over a video link can reduce the impact of the power imbalance, as the weaker participant might feel more comfortable being in a completely different place to the other party.
2. When a great distance separates participants.
The internet builds bridges over international borders and oceans alike. If participants live hundreds or thousands of miles apart, online mediation can put them in the same room using video conferencing software.
3. When there is no mediator in their area.
There will be times when families in remote parts of the country want mediation, but their nearest mediator will be too far away to be visited for regular meetings. Online mediation brings the mediator to the client, saving the client time and money.
