How can lawyers and mediators communicate better by changing old habits?

Changing habits that you’ve spent your professional life forming seems ludicrous. Learning a habit requires an investment of time, and a belief that what you’re doing is beneficial to you.

Writing emails has a few benefits over making a phone call. You can take your time writing it, making sure your message is meticulous. But, ultimately, emails are less personal and more misinterpretable than oral communication.

A phone call is direct, natural and less time consuming than an email. Emails can disrupt a good work schedule, and even home life. I spend far too long managing my time by replying to emails as and when they enter my inbox.

Making phone calls instead of emailing is a crucial part of improving peer-to-peer communication habits.
