Using initiative and teamwork wins respect from clients and peers
By Stephen G Anderson LL.B
Using initiative is something we’re encouraged to do from a young age. Sometimes, using initiative requires a degree of selflessness, which means by-passing the opportunity for personal gain for the greater good. We’d love to be able to help everybody, but it’s not always possible. Sometimes, the best course of action is to give those we can’t help a point in the right direction, instead of leading them down a path that might be unsuitable for them. Taking the initiative to refer those whom we can’t help to a better-suited professional helps us form lasting relationships with other practitioners. Take the initiative to become a master of teamwork. Understand where mediators, lawyers, financial planners and family consultants can help your clients. Refer work when it’s right to, and you will win respect from clients and peers for your thoughtful approach.
